Current Celtics roster deserves one more chance

Celtics - The official site of the NBA for the latest NBA Scores, Stats & News. | NBA.com

After the Boston Celtics fought back from a 0-3 deficit only to lose in game 7 to the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals, it’s been somber in Boston. And although many people are saying the roster needs some adjusting, that’s not true at all.

Going into this season was a ‘championship or bust’ vibe for the C’s franchise, but we can’t forget what was happening from the jump. Ime Udoka was suspended and is now heading to Houston, making Joe Mazzulla a last-minute substitution for the Celtics. It was his first year as a head coach in the NBA, and that’s important to note.

New coaching staff

When a new head coach is at the helm, he needs to bring his own staff and people he can trust. He or she brings their team full of analysts, assistant coaches, and former players that know the ins and outs of the coaching style of that head coach, Mazzulla didn’t have that. Instead, he had to just get put in a tough spot with Udoka’s staff.

Now we see former player and veteran Sam Cassell get added to the C’s coaching staff along with other guys. And we see some C’s assistants leave Boston. Now that Mazzulla will have his coaching team with him, he has more help and support behind him.

Brogdon and Gallinari

Aside from the coaching debacle before the season began, let’s not forget the other changes that were made. When the C’s lost in the NBA Finals to the Golden State Warriors, it was evident they needed depth on the bench. So Brad Stevens went and got current Sixth Man of the Year Malcolm Brogdon and Danilo Gallinari.

Brogdon played great this season, he averaged 14.9 points and shot 44% from deep this regular season. As far as Gallinari, the big man suffered a season-ending knee injury before the first game was played, he didn’t play a single game.

So before people go and get upset about the roster, remember that Brad Stevens made changes. But one half of the new additions didn’t play. This roster deserves another shot.

Jaylen Brown and other vets

It will be hard to keep this expensive roster together if Jaylen Brown receives a max deal, which he deserves. We can’t forget Grant Williams wanted that $20 million towards the end of the regular season as well.

And we can’t forget that Brown and Jayson Tatum are the winningest duo in the NBA. They’re both in their mid-twenties and have another year before touching their prime. Both players were brought to Boston by drafting, which already gives a certain connection between them and the organization. It would be silly to break them up.

The C’s front office has some work ahead of them this offseason, but best believe, if they CAN make it happen, they SHOULD keep this roster together.
