Early in the offseason the Celtics have made it clear that they’re looking into the future, and Celtics fans should be prepared to wait until another championship happens.

Brad Stevens chose to get rid of Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, two big pieces that played a large role in the C’s championship season just last year. Now with Luke Kornet gone to the Spurs for a four-year contract contract worh $41 million, the C’s also no longer have a front court. The moves were taken in order to sneak under the second apron, basically getting rid of the large contracts the Celtics bought to put together a championship team.

But the truth is that most of those players were past their prime. Holiday fought injuries for the latter part of the season, KP was always hurt, and Kornet was just there when the C’s ran out of bigs.

Now with Jayson Tatum out healing a ruptured achilles, the Celtics don’t have much of a shot at winning a title next season or the season after that. What these moves are showing is that they hope to step into the future of the organization with younger players surrounding Jaylen Brown and Tatum. Anfernee Simons wasn’t only supposed to just be a piece to compliment JB and JT, but a possible star in the making. Last season he averaged nearly 20 points a night. Why else would they add a guard with Derrick White and reigning Sixth Man of the Year Payton Pritchard who’ve both been on a constant trajectory in their careers?

There’s still questions that need to be filled, most importantly, the back court. This past NBA Draft the C’s picked up two forwards from overseas in Hugo González and Noah Penda — hoping to get another KP-esque big. Also hoping that those bigs can play into the Joe Mazzulla style of offense where spreading the floor for 3-pointers helps open lanes for drives. Only time will tell with the rookies, but the Celtics have to pick up another big this offseason. Big Al ain’t gonna cut it.

Nonetheless, it would be premature to say the Celtics are in a rebuilding stage, but the building is definitely under renovation.
