Today was the first day of organized team activities (OTAs) and according to Patriots-Wire and other media platforms, Drake Maye threw four interceptions during 11-on-11 competition.
Personally, I think it would be a bit of a stretch to overreact to throwing INT’s before the preseason. Drake Maye’s still getting used to his new teammates, new plays, new head coach, back into the flow of 11 on 11 football. We’re still talking about a young quarterback that didn’t even play an entire season yet.
Tight end Hunter Henry shared his thoughts after the practice.
“They all matter, for sure. I’m saying it’s early in the sense of like, alright, we can fix these things,” said Henry, via Tom Curran’s “Patriots Talk Podcast”. “But obviously we don’t want to put the ball in harm’s way. That’s probably the biggest priority in this league is that turnovers win and lose football games. That’s a huge priority of ours on offense that we got to be better at, and we weren’t good at that last year.”
On the other hand, it is worth noting that in his rookie season, Maye threw 10 interceptions out of the 13 games he played in. I got the chance to look at every interception Maye threw last season, and I must say — there could be some reason for concern.
The interceptions Maye threw typically came in the pocket. At times he overthrew receivers, he also made a lot of bad reads when it came to throwing a deep ball down the middle. It seemed like at times last year he had more belief in his arm talent than the reality. Trying to muscle the football between defenders and zip passes in tough spots. His throw could use some more air under it, but I’m sure that will come with time. Most of Maye’s success came when he used his feet and kept the defense on its toes.
It’s worth keeping an eye out Maye’s development as the summer progresses. With added weapons such as Stephon Diggs, Henry, and Kendrick L. Bourne — we can only hope things will begin to click. It was clear in this offseason that the Patriots were trying to up its offense, but it all starts with Maye.
