NEW YORK — Over the Weekend, the Boston Celtics’ blowout win over the New York Knicks seemed like a sign of hope, but that was quickly shut down Monday night in Madison Square Garden.
The Knicks were able to take the lead in the second half and come out with a 121-113 win over the Celtics. Knicks now have gone up 3-1 in the series. What made matters worse, Jayson Tatum went down with an apparent leg injury late in the fourth quarter. Tatum finished with 42 points and left in a wheel chair.
To put it simply — the C’s season is over.
Kristaps Porzingis played, but it was clear his illness was still bothering him. He wasn’t able to play significant minutes, just 24 and finished with 7 points. The interior defense was nearly non existent for the Celtics. Though the C’s was hot in the first quarter, we knew from watching the entire series that the Knicks were going to come back and bring the game close.
It was at the end of the third quarter that the Knicks began to come alive and push the ball down the floor. There was no answer for Karl-Anthony Towns who had 23 points and 11 boards. Jalen Brunson shined with 39 points and 12 assists, though his ankle injury seemed to bother him, he fought through it and put on a spectacular performance.
Jaylen Brown didn’t look like himself, he finished with 20 points. And though he started the game attacking and hitting some shots, he slowed down. Same thing for Jrue Holiday, Payton Pritchard only got 20 minutes, Derrick White was solid from deep and finished with 23 points.
Overall, it’s an unfortunate situation for the Celtics. Hopefully they’ll be able to defend their home floor Wednesday, but it’s looking grim. Though Tatum appeared to be in serious pain coming off the floor — all we can do is hope for the best.
