The table is set for one of the oldest rivalries to hit the stage once again on Cinco De Mayo (May 5): Boston vs New York.
The Knicks were able to take care of business tonight and defeat the New York Knicks in Game 6, final score 116-113. Now the C’s and Knicks will have to face one another in order for a shot at the conference finals between the winner of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Indiana Pacers.
From the season opener, the Celtics have been owning the Knicks all season winning all four meetings. Though it does seem like the round before where the Celtics defeated the Orlando Magic in five games, may have some concerns in terms of health. These three things below are if everyone is healthy.
So here it is:
Back court needs to play physical defense on Knicks guards
It’s no secret that Tom Thibodeau has been playing his starting five a lot of minutes all season, and I think that’s part of the reason the Pistons were able to extend the series to six games. There are points down the stretch where the Knicks look tired, especially Josh Hart and Jalen Brunson. If the Celtics back court are able to apply pressure and wear down the Knicks’ guards than the favor leans towards the Celtics.
Jrue Holiday will be a big factor depending on when he’ll return from a hamstring injury. If he’s able to play, then that helps Derrick White, Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum each to switch out over screens and still play aggressive. The Celtics have more depth that Joe Mazzulla can go to. If the Celtics are able to wear down the Knicks without fouling, that allows for late-game runs to happen in which the C’s can turn a 5-point game to a blowout in half a quarter.
Kristaps Porzingis to play like a star
Al Horford will have his moments in this series where he’ll make some big shots and key rebounds — but it’s all about Kristaps Porzingis in the back court. With Karl Anthony-Towns being able to score in the post, shoot 3’s and make plays off the dribble — Porzingis will have a tough assignment. KAT, who averaged 19 points and 10 boards last series, is more agile than KP and is likely to have a couple good games. However, KP also has the ability to cause havoc by altering and blocking shots down low. KP has averaged 1.5 rejections and 6.8 boards in the regular season — C’s will need big play from him.
Offensively, the 7-foot-2 big has averaged 19.2 points and has shot 41.2% from the field in the regular season. If he can get going from deep, there’s nothing stopping the Celtics from going on a massive run. If KP is able to get a couple offensive rebounds, then they don’t stand a chance. Keeping him out of foul trouble will be key.
Jayson Tatum to get his shot going
Last playoff series, Tatum averaged 31 points, 11 rebounds, and shot 36.4% from deep. He suffered a wrist injury that sidelined him for a game, but he came back and was effective. There’s nobody on the Knicks roster than can stop JT from doing what he wants. If Tatum can get going with his shot, it allows other guys such as Derrick White and Payton Pritchard to catch-and-shoot.
