BOSTON — As I sat in my apartment watching the Boston Celtics beat the Orlando Magic on a beautiful Sunday afternoon I couldn’t help but notice that I may have been in wrong in my prediction.
I had the Celtics winning the first round playoff series in six games, but it may be a gentlemen’s sweep.
The biggest reason for my change of predictions is how the Celtics won that game. I already knew the C’s were going to need something big from the other key players other than Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum — and that’s exactly what happened. Derrick White finished with 30 points, knocking down seven 3-pointers. It was the third time in his career he dropped 30 in the playoffs. Payton Pritchard came off the bench and scored 19 points. Though my prediction of game 1 was right, I didn’t expect the domination without the production of the starting 5.
Jayson Tatum didn’t hit a 3-pointer until late in the game and finished with 17 points and 14 boards. For most of the game Tatum struggled, he even took a hard fall in the second half on his wrist-but ultimately finished the game. Jaylen Brown had 16 points. Kristaps Porzingis only had 5. However, the C’s still held a double-digit lead for majority of the second half. Orlando played them tough in the first half, but it was the guard play of the C’s that caused issues.
Sure, the Magic have the size to matchup nice with Brown and Tatum, even against Porzingis and Al Horford. But the quickness of White and Pritchard caused issues. Their ability to catch and shoot quickly caused issues.
Despite the Magic losing, they did have certain points where they found success. Paolo Banchero scored a game-high 36 points and 11 rebounds. The former Duke Blue Devil was hitting mid range jumpers and finding success with his shot. Franz Wagner played solid defense on Tatum using size and intensity.
To put it simply, the Celtics had too much depth.
I still think the Magic can force a game or two, but after Game 1 — this is looking like a quick series.
