Super Bowl 59 ended with Jalen Hurts hoisting up his first Lombardi Trophy and winning MVP honors as the Eagles beat the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22. The fact of the matter is, this is the next great rivalry the NFL will see for the next 10 years.
It’s not Josh Allen and Mahomes, it’s not Lamar Jackson and Mahomes, because let’s be real–Mahomes is better than them when it comes to winning in big moments. However, now that the Super Bowl record is tied 1-1 between the two quarterbacks, this makes for an interesting storyline moving forward in the post-Brady era.
After losing to the Chiefs two years ago in a exciting matchup, Hurts comes back and foils Mahomes’ plan to win his third straight, and fourth total Super Bowl. Hurts through for 221 yards and two throwing touchdowns to go with one rushing. Mahomes threw two interceptions and finished with two touchdowns but the game was over by the time he started making completions down the field. Much like when Mahomes lost to Brady in the Super Bowl, Mahomes was being rushed by the front four and couldn’t escape the pressure. I wouldn’t say teams have completely figured out Mahomes, but he does need some better offensive weapons alongside of him. DeAndre Hopkins dropped a big pass before the half that would’ve kept the drive alive to help put points on the board. Travis Kelce was virtually non-existent and is past his prime. The shift in power is happening.
The next couple years for the Chiefs will be crucial for their success in the back half of Mahomes’ career. It’s not about if Andy Reid will continue to coach or if Kelce will elect to retire, those things are bound to happen. It’s whether the front office will find long lasting pieces for Mahomes for years to come. Like when Tom Brady had Rob Gronkowski for the second half of his career. Bringing in mediocre guys like JuJu Smith-Schuster just won’t cut it.
As for Philly, Hurts proved that he’s their guy for years to come. He can use his feet, throw it deep, and make good decisions with the ball. Aside from an interception in the first half, Hurts played a brilliant game. He ran the ball or got rid of it quick when Kansas City blitzed. Though Saquan Barkley didn’t have his best game, I know Giants fans gotta be happy for him, but pissed that they let him go. The beauty of sports.
For years to come this is the rivalry right here. I know we won’t get to see them in the Super Bowl against one another every year, but make no mistake, these are the studs of the NFL for the next five years. Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts.
