The blockbuster midseason trade of Luka Doncic and Anthony Davis has left many thinking whether there are any players who are untouchable when it comes to being traded.
The short answer is yes, there are still players out there who are. Players nowadays have more freedom and power within their contracts that have no-trade clauses that they can exercise. Players can now be part of the decision making in a way when it comes to being moved to a different organizations. Now of course that goes for the superstars, but nonetheless there are players with those powers.
As time goes, more players will be getting paid an absurd amount of money. That’s just how it is. However, I do think giving players max contracts are being used with more caution and rightfully so. Luka wasn’t taking care of his body well, he’s been playing pro ball since a teen, and the future is unsure when it comes to him. I’m not saying I would’ve made the same moves, but I understand the thinking.
Players like Wemby, Jayson Tatum, and SGA are currently untouchable. That doesn’t mean by next year that can change, but for this season, they aren’t being moved anywhere. That’s just how the game is now, but make no mistake, the stars are still the stars.
The Luka and AD trade was an anomaly.
