Recently, the football world has been rumbling over the idea of future Hall of Fame coach Bill Belichick heading to the college level at the University of North Carolina–while some may be confused, here’s some reasons why it may make sense.

Can be a ‘dictator’ at the college level

I use the word ‘dictator’ very loosely in this case, but at the college level head coaches do have more power over their program. We’ve seen Bill Belichick and Robert Kraft bump heads throughout the final years of their tenure together. Whether it was getting rid of Jimmy Garoppolo, having Tom Brady’s trainer in the facilities during the season, or just who to draft, the final decision was primarily left to the owner. Well at the college level, Bill has the power of who to bring on to the team with little to no resistance. He gets to decide how everything goes for his team. If he wants the culture to be one way, he doesn’t have to worry about a star player going to the media and making things into a circus, though he did a good job not allowing that while in New England for the most part.

Not dealing with millionaire players who don’t care

This point sort of piggy back’s off of the first reasoning. Although NIL deals have changed the landscape of college football, the truth of the matter is that these are still kids who want to be set up for success after college. Throw in the fact that Belichick won six rings with the New England Patriots and he already got himself having players wanting to come and play for him. There are way more players in the NFL who already feel as if they’re set financially and don’t care to win a Super Bowl, or win games. On The Pat McKafee Show, Belichick made his pitch for players if he became a Tar Heel:

“Let me put this in capital letters, if, ‘I.F.’ I was in a college program, that college program would be a pipeline to the NFL for players that had ability to play in the NFL,” Belichick said. “It would be a professional program: training, nutrition, scheme, coaching, techniques, that would transfer to the NFL. It will be an NFL program at a college level.”

Those words alone on one of the most popular sports shows in America already will catch the ears of players who aren’t going to Alabama, Georgia, or LSU.

Little interest from NFL franchises

Though there’s never many job openings for an NFL head coach after each season, it was surprising to see that not many teams wanted to bring on Belichick. I’m sure Bill would be able to be on a coaching staff in a heart beat, but he has too much of an amazing resume for that. Therefore, this all could be used as leverage for any other NFL team out there that is looking for a head coach at the end of this season (possibly Dallas, Jets, or Raiders), but maybe he’s serious about going to UNC. If so, then this could possibly just be a new journey for Bill and his illustrious coaching career. His coaching staff has spent time at the college level (Bill O’Brien currently at Boston College), and maybe it was Bill who told them to go there. Maybe this is what he envisioned on doing at some point in his career.
