Saturday nights overtime 126-123 win over the Toronto Raptors thanks to a Jayson Tatum buzzer-beater was just the latest installment of the Boston Celtics mailing it in.

The C’s currently sit second in the eastern conference standings with an 11-3 record. Losses to the Pacers, Warriors, and Hawks have all had a trend: the Celtics decided to turn it on late in the game when it was too late. All three games have a total loss of 10 points together, one of those games came in overtime. However, the Celtics have been doing just fine.

It’s worth mentioning that at no point this season have they been at full strength. They’ll be expecting their star big Kristaps Porzingis to make his return for the first time this season next month. Right now the Celtics have proven to still be one of the best teams in the NBA, and perhaps the best in the east (they’ll play the unbeaten Cleveland Cavaliers team Tuesday).

Right now the Celtics have been able to get by with shooting a ton of three-pointers. Since Joe Mazzulla took the helm, the C’s have been putting up deep range shots at a high clip. The amount of shots have given them an advantage math-wise thanks to the amount of solid shooters Boston has. Sam Hauser coming off the bench is a huge boost in the shooting department, and so is Payton Pritchard who’s averaging 15.5 points a night. At times the Celtics can get cold and rely on their perimeter defense, or either try to shoot themselves out the slump. Other times, the Celtics will try to drive to the basket with Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown and be successful.

There is a silver lining to all of this — the Celtics no longer panic in tense situations. When they find themselves down with 2 minutes left in regulation they don’t speed their game up or switch up the game plan. Instead, they swing the ball, try to get a good luck, and no stress if it’s Derrick White or Jrue Holiday taking an important shot. They now have championship experience and have been showing it. They know the regular season in the NBA is a race and not a sprint.

Even the buzzer beater last night felt like a game that the Celtics should’ve put away in the third quarter. However, teams are able to stay in the game. Boston has learned winning plays and key stops instead of just trying to have star players go for 40 every night–that’s what’s been key.

Though I don’t expect the Celtics to take the Cavs lightly.
