BOSTON — The Boston Celtics (8-2) found a way to defeat the Brooklyn Nets (4-5) Friday night in overtime despite trailing for most of the game, final score 108-104.
From the opening tip-off the Brooklyn Nets put their foot on the gas pedal with a 16-2 run to open up the game. Cam Thomas was on-point in the scoring department with 31 points to lead the Nets. Dennis Schroder also became a problem in the closing minutes with his quick speed in the pick and roll.
However, the C’s didn’t give up even with Jaylen Brown missing another game with a hip injury. In overtime, it was Jayson Tatum who began to make big plays not only offensively, but on the defensive side. He made a big contest on Thomas that forced an air ball which was ultimately a shot clock violation. Tatum hit a big turnaround midrange jumper to give the C’s the lead. Tatum finished with 33 points and nine rebounds. The largest lead for the Celtics was five points.
Once again, Payton Pritchard came up big and scored 20 points off the bench which was proven to be needed. Sam Hauser did manage to score eight points, but the Celtics bench didn’t provide much offense. Al Horford finished had a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards.
Final thoughts
Once again the Celtics put up over 50 three-point attempts with 53 total and only hit 26% of their shots. Although that’s a concern, the bright spot is that they were able to pull out a victory in a different way. The Celtics are going to get everyones best shot, and with injuries to two stars, this was a good win.
The Celtics will head to Milwaukee to face the Bucks on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. The C’s already defeated the Doc Rivers led team, we’ll see if they can do it again and if Jaylen Brown will be suited up.
