Yesterday was quite the day for Boston Celtics fans.
The C’s blew out the New York Knicks 132-109 Tuesday night and had a record tying-29 three’s made. There were some questions surrounding the defending NBA Champions in whether they’d still dominate, well now you have it. Here are some takeaways from the home opener and first game to the season.
Celtics are still the best team even without Kristaps Porzingis
Porzingis is expected to return sometime in December, but it appears that the Celtics will be just fine without him. Not only offensively do the Celtics look more than capable of outscoring any team in the league, but they are also dominant on defense. The C’s forced the Knicks to commit 12 turnovers with their ability to play help defense and get in the passing lanes. Derrick White was the best shot blocking guard last season, Jrue Holiday plays championship defense and can switch out on bigs too. Sam Hauser looks like he’s gotten better defensively, the same with Luke Kornet.
Tatum and Brown have a chip on their shoulder
It was clear from the start to finish of the game that Jayson Tatum is not playing around this season, and the same goes for Jaylen Brown. Tatum, who finished with 37 points, was aggressive on offense and got hot early. However, the former Duke player didn’t force anything or hold the ball for too long and he attacked the rim when he had the mismatch. It appears that Brown and Tatum cleaned up the little things that may have led to shooting slumps and allowing teams to get back in games. For Brown to not be selected on Team USA, and for Tatum not to play much over the summer, the rest of the league should be worried.
The bench is a cause for worry, but not too much worry
The bench of the Celtics came in early due to the lead they had, and the TD Garden was chanting for one more three-pointer to be made in order to break the record of most made in a single game. However, the team went on to miss 13 straight long range shots. The Celtics bench plays hard, but they lack offensive talent. Xavier Tillman and Luke Kornet appear to be taking more minutes to let Al Horford to get more rest. Hopefully one of them will be able to find some offense when they see the floor.
