On Wednesday, Jerod Mayo announced that he made his starting quarterback decision, but won’t let it be known until Thursday in a team meeting, and after some thinking, Drake Maye shouldn’t start.
Over Fanatics Fest NYC, former Patriots QB Tom Brady got a chance to speak to ESPN’s Stephen A Smith on the state of the game and the quarterbacks of today. He made a point saying there isn’t a system that guys come up and learn under. When Brady first got to the NFL, he didn’t play. The same goes for Patrick Mahomes who was behind Alex Smith for a year before coming in and showing the world is talent.
We can’t forget about Mac Jones, the guy who led college football in a bunch of categories as a QB and won the National Championship. When he got to New England is first year he was carried by a good defense, all-time coach, a solid running game and decent special teams. Jones made the pro bowl the first season and thins looked great, until it didn’t. The very next season and so forth, more pressure was put on him to produce, but not only did he have no legit weapons alongside of him, he never had a chance to really develop. He was thrown into a franchise and state that is accustomed to winning games. Now Jones in Jacksonville as a backup.
If Maye is going to be that guy, he needs to learn from a veteran in Jacoby Brissett. He needs to see from the sidelines what to do during the down times during a game. He needs to learn what to do when the media gets on the starting quarterback for losing, because we saw Jones begin to struggle with that towards the end of his tenure in New England.
We’ll all learn Thursday if Maye got the start or not, but for his professional career, it’ll probably be best he doesn’t start right away.
