The 2024 NBA season is over, and with summer basketball comes the Olympics in Paris which starts on July 27, and with the roster set for USA, there’s some guys that shouldn’t be on the roster.
The reasons for these players listed below are for a number of different reasons, but mostly of what they’ve done, or haven’t done, on their NBA teams this past season.
Kawhi Leonard
This past season Leonard only played two games in the playoffs due to a knee injury in which the Clippers ultimately lost to the Mavericks in six games. During the regular season, he played 68 games which is the most he’s played since the 2016-2017 season. Leonard has missed a lot of games in his career due to injury, a lot of games due to load management as well. Although he’s undoubtably one of the best players in the league when healthy, but he’s rarely fully healthy enough to complete a mission. He has no business being on an olympic team when he was not on the floor when his team was eliminated. He should be spending the summer getting healthy and getting better.
Joel Embiid
The former MVP was diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy, migraine’s and blurred vision, he ended up playing well in the playoffs, but then he had a really bad knee injury that hindered him too. He only played 39 regular season games, the lowest since his rookie year. He’s prone to injuries and needs to worry about being healthy. He also was eligible to play for France. There’s multiple reasons for him not playing on the USA team.
Tyrese Haliburton
The shoot-first point guard splashed on the NBA scene this season as he brought them to an Eastern Conference Finals appearance before losing to the Celtics. Haliburton also would get hurt just a couple games in to the series before ultimately being ruled out with a leg injury. We all knew the injury wasn’t too serious, but it was enough for him to sit out as his team’s season ended. The 24-year-old and all-star has a bright future in front of him with a lot of basketball ahead of him. Not only do I believe he should focus on being 100% healthy, but worry about fixing his Indiana team.
Jrue Holiday
First off, if we’re going by years ago when the USA Team wasn’t such a very-much wanted spot, a guy like Holiday would’ve been on the team. However, the two-time NBA champion averaged 12.5 points a game and is amongst 20 and 30 ppg’s type of players. He was the fifth option on the Celtics the past year. He didn’t make the all-star team this past season either. He’s a great player no doubt, but among the rest of the roster, he’s the clear outlier.
LeBron James
Why? That’s my question for James being on the USA Olympic Team. It seems like he’s just completing side quests at this point because it’s clear that the Lakers aren’t a contender on winning anything. James also just signed an extension with LA, his son Bronny drafted by the team, and they got Anthony Davis back. They missed out on DeMar DeRozan who eventually went to the Kings. James is 39 and has had a lot of miles on his body, he already has medals, so at this point it doesn’t solidify his career any more than now.
