It was a matter of time before we saw the Celtics give Jayson Tatum the money he deserves and that happened on Monday, including Derrick White.
According to ESPN, the Celtics have signed Jayson Tatum to a five-year contract worth $314 Million. That’s currently the biggest contract in the history of the NBA. The contract includes a player option and trade kicker. Also, the Celtics extended with guard Derrick White on a four-year $125.9M the same day according to ESPN. Boston now has every member of its starting lineup under contract through at least through two seasons.
It’s worth noting that the investing company that owns the Celtics have also announced that they are putting the C’s up for sale. This is all coming off the Celtics winning their 18th NBA Championship in franchise history.
My thoughts
After the Celtics beat the Dallas Mavericks in five games, it was only a matter of time before they started to sign on their starters for a longer time. They weren’t going to let Jayson Tatum nor Derrick White go. They signed Jaylen Brown last year to an expensive contract, rightfully so, so it was only right to do the same to Tatum. Midseason, Jrue Holiday agreed to sign an extension with the C’s. However, I didn’t expect the owners of the Celtics to put the team up for sale. When thinking about it longer it makes sense because the value of the Celtics are now at an all-time high after winning a chip. They signed on stars for a longer period of time as their championship window is now open, and with inflation, the price on purchasing this team has to be in the billions. Smart move by the owners.
Basketball-wise, I don’t think anyone can bat an eye on Tatum getting this type of contract. He’s an NBA All-Star, First Team All-NBA player, and now an NBA Champion. As far as White, he played at an all-star caliber not only in the regular season, but in the playoffs as well. This season he averaged 15.2 points, 5.2 assists, and 4.2 rebounds per game. The 30-year-old also played in 73 games and shot 46.1 percent from the field, including a career-high 39.6 percent from three.
In summary: The Celtics had to make these signings as the window of winning championships is right now, the numbers are staggering but out of the C’s control — good moves.
