It was announced Wednesday that the Milwaukee Bucks have agreed to pick up Doc Rivers as head coach just one day after firing Adrian Griffin.
Currently the Bucks sit at the second seed in the eastern conference behind the Celtics with a 31-13 record. And although being among the top of the league is a good place to be in, the Bucks have championship expectations, and the way they was playing wasn’t cutting it. So here’s three reasons why bringing in Doc Rivers makes since.
Championship DNA in a coach and roster
When Doc Rivers won his first and only NBA Championship with the Celtics back in 2008, Doc had the right roster to do it. No, none of the big three (Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen) won titles prior, but they all yearned for winning a ring. This Bucks roster is very similar to that roster. Damian Lillard wants to win, and he came to Milwaukee to do so, Giannis Antetokounmpo already has a title and knows what it takes. The team came together much like Doc’s time in Boston, and we saw what he did with that.
The Bucks have the defensive talent to be elite
This isn’t like when Doc was on the 76ers with James Harden, Joel Embiid, and Ben Simmons or like the Clippers with Blake Griffin and Chris Paul, those teams didn’t really have the pieces to be an elite defensive team. And to win an NBA title, teams need to be one of the best defenses in the league. The Bucks have size, skill, and strength to be a top defensive team like they’ve been in the past years when Giannis was coming up.
No other coach fits the task at hand
Let’s be honest, what Doc has in front of him looks doable, but it won’t be easy. The Bucks are already one the best teams in the eastern conference, yet the organization is dissatisfied, mostly because of the lack of defense. Asking any coach to come damn near in the middle of the season and turn things around would be nearly impossible. Doc Rivers, a championship coach, has the respect earned to do so.
