It was announced Thursday morning that after six Super Bowl titles, and 24 NFL seasons that Bill Belichick will part ways from the New England Patriots.
The former head coach was at a press conference moments later to speak to the press about his departure.
“Robert and I after a series of discussions have mutually agreed to part ways and for me this is a day of gratitude and celebration,” said Belichick.
“It’s an amazing opportunity, we received tremendous support, we had a vision of building a winner, a championship football team here and that’s exceeded my wildest dreams and expectations,” he continued.
Bill’s stats
Bill’s stats: His record as an NFL coach is 302-165 (.647 win percentage), 31-13 postseason record (.705 win percentage).
Belichick has 18 winning records in 18 full seasons and 17 AFC East titles. He was just 47-57 with the Patriots without Brady. With Brady, he was 219-64 (.774). In the four years without Brady, the Patriots went 29-38 with one playoff appearance and no AFC East titles.
What’s this mean for the Pats
Ex-Patriot and former linebacker Jerrod Mayo has been in the talks of possibly taking up the empty head coaching spot. That would piss me off given the lack of fair opportunities that’s always given to black coaches, but I digress.
Guys such as Josh McDaniel, Matt Patricia, Bill O’Brien and more are most likely on standby as they could possibly take up the position as well. Former Patriot player and former Tennessee Titan head coach Mike Vrabel has also been in talks of potentially landing in New England.
No matter who takes the spot it’s clear that the Patriots aren’t going to be good next season, or most likely anytime soon. It’s truly the dawn of a new era. It’s just unclear where that era is heading.
