BOSTON — Jayson Tatum’s 45-point performance took over Wednesday night in an overtime win against the Minnesota Timberwolves, 127-120.
Both Jaylen Brown and Tatum combined for 80 points in a battle between the top seeds in the NBA. The game was close for nearly the entire game with the lead going to both teams. At halftime, the C’s only led 54-53 and the game continued to be intense with the TD Garden being packed till the closing moments.
The C’s were down for most of the fourth quarter until Tatum began driving to the basket and shooting long range shots over KAT when he saw the mismatch. During overtime, the C’s outscored Minnesota, 16-9.
Wednesday night was one of the few moments in Tatum’s career where he truly resembled the late-great Kobe Bryant. Tatum’s clutch gene was activated against a Minnesota team that’s standing at the top of the western conference. Earlier in the season the T’Wolves beat the Celtics. Tatum drove to the basket, and when he saw the mismatch, he wasn’t passive on plays. He wanted the moment, capitalized, and relished in that same moment.
The T’Wolves, without Rudy Gobert, leaned on Anthony Edwards, a straight bucket getter, to lead them to the win. Edwards finished with 29 points and was nearly unstoppable in certain points of the game with his tight handle and solid shooting. Karl-Anthony Towns dropped 25 points and 13 rebounds.
The Celtics home streak will live another couple days at 18-0, their next game will be at Milwaukee to face the Bucks who sit four games behind Boston.
