Derrick White is an All-Star (and the most impactful player on the Celtics) - CelticsBlog

Let’s be honest, the all-star game is a popularity concert, and Celtics guard Derrick White won’t win it.

So far this season, White is on the top seeded Celtics averaging 17 points and 5.3 assists a game, while shooting 49% from the field, and 42% from deep. When it comes to what an all-star means, White shows that, he’s on the most winningest team and is making a big impact in each game. When he was on the Spurs, not too many people knew of him outside of San Antonio, but after his game six buzzer beater put back basket against Miami to send the series to a game 7, the world was put on notice.

Now White has shown to be a viable offensive option in replacement of dormer Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart and former Sixth Man of the Year Malcolm Brogdon who were point guards. White can knock down open shots, drive to the basket, and limit turnovers. Defense is how White got to stay in the league.

When you take a closer look at White’s story, it’s inspiring to all hoopers. A undersize guard with not too crazy athletic ability played three years at a Division II school before transferring to Colorado. It’s almost unheard of to see a guy like that not only make the NBA, but be a starter, and average close to 20 a night. For that reason alone should be why he could be an all-star.

However, is White’s game exciting to watch? Of course not, he’s not catching lobs are making the ESPN Top 10 Plays anytime soon if it’s not a buzzer beater. He’s behind guys such as Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Kristaps Porzingis who all average more than White. There’s only been nine instances where four players were chosen to be on the all-star team. And with so many high-flyers, dunkers, and popular superstars, it’s unlikely the Boston Celtics will reenact their 1962 season when they were the first team to do it.

White is playing efficient and out of his mind, he’s playing at an all-star level, but he’s not an all-star this year.
