Payton Pritchard to join USA Select Team this summer

As the Celtics hope that Kristaps Porzingis heals from his foot injury in time for training camp, there’s another question to be answered.

What’s going to happen with Payton Pritchard?

The 6’1 point guard made it clear last season that he wanted some playing time. He saw his 19 minutes a game his rookie season dwindle within each season to last year’s 13 minutes. And as the Celtics want for a title keep getting stronger, it appears they push Pritchard into the shadows more.

Well this upcoming season, he’ll get his shot to prove himself with Marcus Smart no longer in Boston. Grant Williams is in Dallas as well. Pritchard is one of the lasting parts that know the organization and what they’re trying to accomplish. However, with Malcolm Brogdon and Derrick White on the roster, Pritchard will always be the third option. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Let’s be honest: Pritchard isn’t a scrub, but if he went to another team, there’s a high chance he wouldn’t last a full season on the roster. He has good handle, can shoot the 3, but that’s about it. His athleticism is pedestrian compared to the rest of the league. The former Oregon player isn’t near a top defender as well. He would end up in the G-League if sent to another NBA team.

He fits what the culture of Boston is. He’s the Julian Edelman for the Celtics. He comes in with high energy and tries to be the Swiss-Army knife. That isn’t to say he can’t make an impact for the C’s this upcoming season, but don’t expect too much from him. JD Davidson is looking for his spot.
