This July was the start of the Patriots training camp in Foxboro, and after last year’s season, it’ll be important to lookout for improvements.
The Pats missed the playoffs last year, therefore fans are already hoping to see a big difference in the offense. New additions at the wide receivers and coaching positions will hopefully help drastically improve the help Mac Jones needed.
I got the chance to go to a training camp practice last summer and saw what was coming during the upcoming season. So here’s what to lookout for as the Pats get ready for the preseason.
Mac Jones decision making + throwing
When I got the chance to watch the Patriots practice last summer, it was evident that their offense was going to struggle. Mac Jones was throwing interceptions and incompletions that would show to be the same during the regular season.
For this training camp, it’ll be important to see whether Jones has made the leap into an above-average quarterback. The sophomore slump was expected, he made questionable decisions by throwing beyond the sticks instead of the check down option. Pay attention to whether he’s able to make the smart decision and not make ill-advised throws.
Who’ll be the #1 receiver
With Malcolm Mitchell now in Las Vegas, that leaves the question on who will be the top receiver? Now that the Pats lost out on the race to grab DeAndre Hopkins, they’ll have to go with the core group they already have. JuJu Smith Schuster can be the top guy, but that won’t leave much fans feeling too optimistic about the future.
Bill O’Brien’s changes to the playcalling
Sure, all of these are related to the offense of the Pats, but that’s because any defense under Bill Belichick is going to be good. Now that Bill O’Brien is back on the coaching staff as the offensive coordinator, it’ll hopefully bring some better plays to the Pats.
