Jaylen Brown agrees to five-year, $304 million extension with the Celtics - Liberty Ballers

ESPN announced Tuesday that Jaylen Brown signed a five-year supermax deal worth $304 million — making it the richest deal in NBA history.

Honestly, Brown deserves it.

Of course the “richest deal in NBA history” will catch everyones eyes, but it shouldn’t. The reason being is because the changes in salary cap which allows players to get paid significantly more than they were before. It just so happens Brown is the latest guy to deserve a supermax deal.

Don’t get it twisted, not every good player in the league is inking these types of deals. Brown has helped the Celtics make it to the playoffs for nearly his entire and young pro career. This past season he averaged a career high 26.6 points and 6.6 rebounds a night.

He’s a two-time all-star and made the All-NBA Second Team this past season. He’s been to the finals and has been alongside Jayson Tatum. He’s developed so much as a player to the point where some people question whether Brown should be the top offensive option.

Those questions are silly, nonetheless, this is a good move for the Celtics franchise. Brown has shown that he loves Boston and the sports culture that resides in it. Brown has been an advocate for people of color and see’s himself as more than a guard that can put defenders on posters. He’s a role model that’s never been in the headlines for the wrong reasons.

As he’ll be 27 in October, he’s just now reaching his prime, which means it’s the best time for the Celtics to win a championship. The past two years has let the NBA know that it’s the Celtics time to cash-in on winning a ring. Signing Kristaps Porzingis this offseason and Sixth Man of the Year Malcolm Brogdon the year before has shown it. Now with a second-year head coach in Joe Mazzulla, the squad has formed and it’s time to produce.

Tatum and Brown, that’s the duo that will be heard in Boston for the next half-a-decade. If they never win a chip, they’ll go down in the likes of Stockton/Malone and Penny/Shaq, but if they win, they get put in the list of the greats.

Whatever ends up happening, it will sure being a ton of money to the Celtics franchise, therefore making the big contract worth it.
