Is Celtics forward Grant Williams worth $20 million per season?

Grant Williams time is up in Boston, and honestly, it was a longtime coming.

The Mavericks signed Williams (hand) to a four-year, $54 million sign-and-trade in a three-team deal with the Celtics and Spurs on Wednesday, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.

Williams underwent hand surgery after the season ended for the Celtics. But the way the Celtics roster is heading, Grant never fit in. This past season, Grant only averaged 17 minutes in the playoffs. Whether his hand played a factor was never confirmed, but nonetheless, his role was dwindling.

We can’t forget how Grant wanted his money before the playoffs began and was vocal about it. The former Tennessee player wanted $20 million, but his play didn’t matchup well with his expectations. I believe for that to have left a sour feeling for those in the Celtics front office.

Boston bringing Kristaps Porzingis on to the roster shows that the front court wasn’t doing enough this past season. It’s worth noting that even earlier that Danilo Gallinari was picked up before the season.

That’s not to say Grant Williams can’t still be a very productive player on another team. With Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic in the backcourt, they need a guy that can catch-and-shoot after the duo drive to the basket and forces the defense to collapse. Williams is also a guy that prides himself on defense, therefore, he brings an edge to the western conference team.

Nonetheless, no team loses in this trade as it free’s up some money for the Celtics to make Jaylen Brown happy. It also gives Dallas something they need as well. Whether this is the last move the Celtics make is still up for debate.
