The Boston Celtics Could Trade For Bradley Beal, But Won't

The NBA rumors of Brad Beal has been taking over the internet, and it has some Boston fans wondering if him coming to the C’s would be a good idea.

The short answer is no, it would not.

This season, Beal averaged 23 points and shot 50% from the field. He’s a three-time all-star and one of the last true shooting guards in the NBA. The man can hoop and is loyal to the team he plays for, it’s about time he leaves Washington.

And with the clauses in his contract, he gets to decide his destination. And being that both Beal and Jayson Tatum are from the St. Louis area, it makes sense that the two would have a chemistry on the court–however, it wouldn’t make the C’s a better team overall.

Yes, Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum often take turns getting buckets and aren’t a cohesive duo. But that doesn’t mean Beal would be any better for what the Celtics are trying to accomplish. Beal has very… and I mean very… little playoff experience. Brown on the other hand, has been part of deep playoff runs his whole career.

Experience out the way, what does Beal do better than Brown? There’s a few things: shoot, dribble, and pass. But would Beal still be as efficient as the number two guy in Boston? His numbers would obviously go down, which could effect his overall game. It’s happened plenty of times (i.e. Russell Westbrook, Kyle Lowry, Goran Dragic, Kevin Love… the list goes on) and Beal wouldn’t be the exception. The fact we haven’t seen Beal on any team with actual high season-aspirations should be a concern.

According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, he has reason to believe the C’s want to give Brown his max deal.

“My feel from talking to sources is that the Celtics are not necessarily in on this one,” Brian Windhorst said. “Their intention is to get Jaylen Brown done on a contract extension this year, and even if they got Jaylen Brown done, the idea of bringing in Bradley Beal would be extraordinarily difficult because of the three contracts together. I don’t think any conversation that involves trading Jaylen Brown is something the Celtics are super interested in.”

And last but not least, adding Beal won’t fix the Celtics problem. Their problem is their front court in an aging and injured big men core. Al Horford is past his prime, Robert Williams was hurt the entire season, Danilo Gallinari didn’t play a single minute, and Grant Williams was hurt during the playoffs and is undersized. Beal would just be a move that would make headlines, but wouldn’t move the C’s closer to winning a title.
