Inside the friction between Bill O'Brien, DeAndre Hopkins

I understand when reading this headline the first initial thought may be that I’m losing my damn mind! DeAndre Hopkins, who’s now a free agent, is special and there’s no doubt about that–but he isn’t the cure for the Pats.

Let’s look at the past two seasons from the New England Patriots. They’ve been with Mac Jones who brought them to the playoffs his rookie year, and sat on the outside looking in this past season. In both seasons New England’s passing game was terrible. By no means was it Jones’ fault, he didn’t have much help.

Of course Hopkins going to the Patriots would help their offense. In his 10 years, he scored 71 touchdowns, 11,298 receiving yards, and 853 receptions. He played nine games last season due to a suspension for testing positive for Performance Enhancing Drugs. That’s not to say that the Pats don’t give second chances, because they do, but it’s the on-field problems that doesn’t make Hopkins a fit.

The Pats O-line was hurt and just not that good this past season. Mac Jones couldn’t get any time in the pocket, and he can’t extend any plays either. The Patriots offense has a lot of holes that need filling, however, it does look like they’re trying to fix it.

The addition of offensive coordinator and former Texans head coach Bill O’Brien is huge. The two have a chemistry that makes sense, and it’s said that the Pats are ‘optimistic’ about landing Hopkins. Jacoby Meyers, who was the Pats top receiver, left for the Raiders. Hopkins would indeed help the Patriots offense, but there’s more problems in New England.
